Bathtub Refinishing Process - 9 steps !
In this article we will be explain how to refinish a bathtub. As always be sure to take proper safety precautions, and use chemical resistance gloves, grinding mask, eye protection and ventilate the work area with exhauster.
Step 3: Etching the surface
Using etching cream and a clean sponge you can work etching cream into the surfaces. The etching cream should stay on the surface for about 10-15 minutes. Remove the etching cream with the scrub pad, beginning on the outside and working your way in. Dry the tub surface thoroughly with paper towel. You can use your compressor air to blow out any moisture.
Step4: Fill Chips or Defects, and Sand the tub smooth
Using speed filler simply fill any holes, chips or imperfections on the tub surface. Tack off any areas to remove dirt particles. Thoroughly sand it using 220 wet or 80 grid dry sand to remove any choky residues from the etching process and to smooth out any of the chips or imperfections that have been filled.
Step 7 - 8 : Surface Primer & Reglazing / Self-drying
So …. we do 2 layers of a primer coat and 3 paint coats! The tub should be allowed to dry for 24 to 36 hours prior to pulling off any tape or paper. Finally recaulk all seals where required. After all cock dries the newly finished tub will be ready for use. Wash the surfaces with soap and water before using.
Step 9: Enjoy your brand-new bathtub.

Bathtub Refinishing Process
So, let’s begin...
<< WHAT is BETTER: replacing or refinishing? >> - this question will be mentioned couple times in this blog. That`s why before we can start describing the bathtub refinishing process, we would like to explain that in some cases it is better just to replace a bathtub.
Don`t refinish – replace if:
- There is a hole on the wall or on the bathtub’s bottom – to repair these defects is unbelievably difficult process, there is no guarantee that this crack or a hole doesn’t need to be repaired again in a month! Unless you want to sell an apartment with the old bathtub (because you don’t want to invest your money into the remodeling) and you want this old bathtub to look nice (even though you don’t know how long it can last).
- The bathtub has rust throughout! See point 1.
- If you have problems with plumbing (pipes in walls). If you need to change all the pipes it is also better to update your bathtub, unless you want to sell it with old pipes and you don’t want to invest money into it.
In all other cases you can REFINISH YOUR BATHTUB!
Now we will describe the sequence of the refinishing process. As an example we will take metal or pig-iron bathtub that has been refinished before! (Refinished bathtub – is the bathtub that doesn`t have an original surface and has been refinished/deglazed one or more times before.
The bathtub refinishing process consists of 8 steps:
-
Clean and scrape surface
-
Remove caulking
-
Etching the surface
-
Fill Chips or Defects, and Sand the tub smooth
-
Masking and Taping
-
Prep the Surface
-
Surface Primer and Reglazing
-
Self – drying
.
Next time we will explain you each step of bathtub refinishing in more details.
See you on this blog pages.
